WCKD Village – Event Branding & Art Direction
WCKD Village was created as the new identity for one of San Diego’s major downtown Halloween events, replacing the longtime Monster Mash party in the Gaslamp Quarter.
The challenge was to create a more modern, edgy, and culturally relevant identity that would appeal to a younger generation while capturing the energy and rebellious spirit of a massive Halloween street party.
I developed the WCKD Village logo and complete visual identity, creating a flexible brand system that could carry across the entire event experience. The identity was applied to invitations, tickets, event signage, promotional posters, social media advertising, digital banners, website graphics, MTS advertising, bus wraps, billboards, and other large-format applications throughout San Diego.
The brand also served as the foundation for developing a new creative theme each year, allowing the event to reinvent its visual experience while maintaining a recognizable WCKD Village identity. For the 2018 event, I developed a twisted interpretation of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, followed by a dark tarot and black magic theme for 2019.
From the initial logo and visual language to the advertising and physical event environment, I was responsible for developing the artwork and carrying the creative direction across the many touchpoints needed to promote and produce the event.
The result was a complete rebrand that transformed the former Monster Mash into a fresh, modern Halloween experience with a flexible visual identity capable of evolving from year to year.
